This particular song, “Selfishly I Sink,” has been defined by vocalist Brendan Murphy as, “one of the few b-sides from You’re Not You Anymore. Although it doesn’t really have a place on the record I’m still excited that the song finally gets to see the light of day.”
Mixing together melodic tones and heavier ‘mosh-pit’ riffs, Counterparts has such a diverse sound that metal lovers of all backgrounds can enjoy. With emotion-provoking lyrics and a powerful message, “Selfishly I Sink” comes straight from the heart of the members of the band. This song is open for interpretation per each individual listen, but one of the most powerful lyrics I listened to would have to be, “Emotions cast like stones skipped across empty lakes, and selfishly I sink.” Anybody that’s ever felt like their feelings have been thrown aside or proclaimed unreasonable can definitely find comfort in this song.
Unlike traditional music video standards, this song has a video unique all on its own. Mixing together various live show clips from all over the world, as well as bloopers from life on the road with the band members, the video for “Selfishly I Sink” is creative and individual.

Rick Genest, known as Zombie Boy, was born on August 07, 1985, and departed at age 32 on August 1st, 2018; announced by Billboard. The Canadian [LaSalle & Montreal, Quebec] actor, model and musician appeared in Lady Gaga's infamous, "Born This Way" music video; Lady Gaga painted her face to match his tattoos - Gif below. We delve into Zombie Boy's music appearances in the global rock and metal stage within the last decade; sharing [2013 to 2015] music videos where Rick Genest was vocalist or instrumentalist for collaborated projects; join us in our tribute.
Revolver published, "[Rick Genest] grew up in the city's underground punk scene; he got his first tattoo at age 16. By the time he turned 20, his body was practically covered with morbid, skeletal-inspired ink; giving him the appearance of a corpse (hence the nickname)." The NY Times adds, "In 2011, [Genest] made it into The Guinness World Records for most insects tattooed on the body - 176."
In People Magazine, on August 3rd, 2018; Dulcedo Management, who represented Genest, stated they are: "- shocked and saddened by this tragedy.” They shared: “Zombie Boy, Rico, was loved by everyone who had the chance to meet and know him. Icon in the artistic scene and in the fashion and entertainment industries, this innovator has charmed all hearts.”
In a statement obtained by PEOPLE from Dulcedo Management, they wrote that “contrary to reports,” the classification of Genest's death “is yet to be determined.”
Revolver describes prior to the release of "Born This Way:" "Genest was approached by Nicola Formichetti — creative director for fashion mogul Thierry Mugler, and Lady Gaga's stylist — who catapulted him to international fame: this time as a supermodel, as opposed to a side-show attraction. In addition to his starring role in Gaga's "Born This Way" video, Genest appeared in a Mugler ad campaign, modeled for GQ, Vanity Fair, and Vogue Hommes, made cameos in blockbuster films like 2013's 47 Ronin. Genest turned his focus to music; at the time of his death, he had been working on an original LP alongside Rob Zombie guitarist Mike Riggs."
By "side-show" attraction, Mirror.CO.UK interviews Rick Genest who describes his teenage years, "Aged 15, I found out I had a brain tumour. I was told I could die or be left disfigured; I guess this spiralled me into becoming obsessed with the morbid and macabre. As it happened, the operation to remove the tumour went without a hitch, but since then, I’ve known life was too short to not fulfill my dreams of tattoos and body modifications."
Genest adds, "I had my first tattoo – a skull and crossbones on my left shoulder – aged 16 after my operation. I was an outcast Goth as a teen and ran away from home after my first inking. I had an argument with my parents, over something I can’t even remember now, and running away was an act of rebellion."
