Headrush had the chance to catch up with Brian Wille, lead singer of the rising metalcore/djent band Currents.
The band formed in 2011 and has evolved quite a bit since then. Currents is comprised of Connecticut based band members Brian Wille, who became the lead vocalist in 2015, Jeff Brown (drums), Chris Wiseman (guitar), Ryan Castaldi (guitar) and Dee Cronkite (bass).
Wille said along with his joining Currents came the band’s drive to begin touring. While previous shows occurred mostly within Connecticut, the band felt they were ready to branch out. Willie said the new objective was “Let’s do this and go as far as we can with this.”
Currents released their debut album The Place I feel Safest on Friday June 6. Wille, who had previously released 2 EPs, talked about the inspiration behind the album. He told Headrush,
“I’ve never been on a full record. There were things I wanted to talk about that I felt I had never had the chance to nail it right or just never felt like there was a time to talk about it. I took this as an opportunity of like, ok this is our first big release…I want to put everything out on the table.”
Wille also discussed the band’s signing with SharpTone Records. He said of the company, “These people get us, they get where we want to go…It was kind of a match made in heaven sort of deal. They were very supportive of us doing whatever we wanted to do with the record.”
Currents has been performing in metalcore band Miss May I’s Shadow Inside tour since the end of May. When asked what Currents has gained from the tour, Wille said, “Oh my God, we’re gaining everything from this tour. Thank you to Miss May I, for real, for letting us hop on and open for them and the other bands.”
Wille appreciates having the opportunity to see new places, meet new people, get in front of large audiences, and gauge what fans like to hear.
Wille also talked about what we can expect from Currents in the future. He said, “We’re taking it a day at a time. Hopefully we’ll get to tour more, because that would be fantastic.”
