We are just a month away from Breaking Benjamin’s highly anticipated record Ember, coming out on April 13th via Hollywood Records. Once again, the band has given its fans a taste of the new sound with the new single, 'Blood'. This tune certainly picks up where ‘Red Cold River’ and ‘Feed the Wolf’ left off - a familiar Breaking Benjamin sound with honest lyrics, combative guitars and an aggressive driving force throughout.
Out of the three songs released so far, this is personally my favorite chorus which draws inspiration from Phobia’s ‘Topless’ and Dear Agony’s ‘Crawl’ and is sure to be a fan favorite. Old school fans who enjoy the brutal honesty of Burnley’s writing will love lyrics such as “Sick of f***** up // Tired of falling in” which interweaves seamlessly into the stinging guitars of the first verse. There are some definite nu-metal vibes tones used in the guitar mix and especially the last bridge that bring bands like Mudvayne and Taproot to mind, which creates a nice ‘quiet-loud’ contrast.
In recent interviews, Ben Burnley has mentioned that they are looking to make this a heavier record than Dark Before Dawn. Burnley recently said, “Playing-wise, it’s the most difficult album” which certainly sheds some light on the complexity of the guitar work. The three guitar dynamic is without question at the front of the mix in all three of these songs and looks to be a main component in the formula for Ember. It is also important to mention that this is the first record that the new lineup has fully written together as Dark Before Dawn was previously written by Ben Burnley intermittently during the band’s hiatus.
Breaking Benjamin just wrapped up their Winter tour with Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine and will be playing the festival circuit coming up in the Spring and Summer with gigs at Welcome to Rockville, Carolina Rebellion and Rock On The Range.
